Garage Door Balance Adjustment in Augusta, GA

A balanced door stays put when you let go halfway. If yours drifts up, slams down or hangs crooked, the springs and cables need adjusting.

Why Garage Door Balance Matters

Your opener is designed to guide a balanced door, not lift a heavy one. When springs lose tension over time — or were never sized correctly — the opener does more of the work. That wears out the motor and gears, makes the door noisier and can cause reversals and stalls.

A balance adjustment sets the spring tension so the door is close to weightless through its travel and checks that both cables carry equal load.

  • Balance test with the opener disconnected
  • Torsion spring tension adjustment
  • Extension spring adjustment
  • Equal tension on both lift cables
  • Opener force and limit settings rechecked

How to check balance safely

  1. Close the door fully.
  2. Pull the opener’s emergency release cord to disconnect the door.
  3. Lift the door by hand to about halfway and carefully let go, keeping hands clear.
  4. A balanced door stays roughly in place. If it rises, it is over-tensioned; if it falls, it is under-tensioned.
  5. Lower the door and reconnect the opener (usually by running the opener until the trolley re-engages).

If the door is very heavy, moves fast, or you see a broken spring or loose cable, stop the test and lower the door slowly with both hands. Never adjust spring tension yourself.

Signs your door is out of balance

  • It slams the last foot when closing, or creeps up when you let go.
  • It is noticeably harder to lift by hand than it used to be.
  • The opener strains, sounds labored or reverses for no clear reason.
  • One side of the door rises before the other or the bottom isn’t level.

What causes balance problems

Spring fatigue. Springs gradually lose tension and the door gets heavier.

Added weight. Insulation kits, new windows, or a replacement section can change the door’s weight.

Wrong springs. Springs that don’t match the door’s weight and height will never balance it correctly.

Uneven cables. If one cable is longer or has slipped on the drum, one side lifts first.

How we adjust balance

On torsion systems, the technician adds or removes turns on the springs using proper winding bars, then checks that both cables are equally tight. On extension systems, the spring hook position or the cable is adjusted. If the springs are worn or mismatched, replacing them is often better than adjusting. See spring replacement and opener safety & force adjustment.

Balance Adjustment FAQs

How do I know if my garage door is balanced?

Disconnect the opener with the door closed, lift it halfway and let go carefully. A balanced door stays about where you left it.

Can I adjust the springs myself?

No. Adjusting torsion spring tension is dangerous without training and proper winding bars. Leave it to a technician.

Why does my door slam shut?

Usually the springs have lost tension or a spring has broken, so the door falls faster than it should. Stop using it and call for inspection.

Can an unbalanced door damage my opener?

Yes. The opener is meant to move a balanced door. Extra load wears the motor and gears and can cause the door to reverse or stall.

How often should balance be checked?

Checking balance a couple of times a year is reasonable, and it is part of any good tune-up or maintenance visit.

Why is my door uneven on one side?

One cable may be loose or off its drum, or one spring on a two-spring system may have broken. See our page on uneven garage doors.
